サンディエゴで仕事を終えたあと、元同僚のDr. Paglioneが新しくラボを立ち上げたUniv. of Maryland (College Park)を訪問しました。

彼らは鉄砒素系（アイアンプニクタイト）超伝導体の試料作成と基礎物性測定を精力的に行っており、目覚ましい成果をあげています。研究室セミナーで私のプレゼンを披露したあと、研究室ツアーをしてもらいました。旧超伝導研究センター（高温超伝導フィーバーのときにできたもの）を引き継いだナノテクの研究施設です。そこは昔サイクロトロンが設置されていたという厚さ６フィート（1.8 ｍ）のコンクリート壁の円形の地下室を改造したラボでした。設備の充実さをみるにつけ、日本と米国のスタートアップ資金の桁の違いを痛感します。それに伴う責任も大きいのですが･･･。カレッジパークは米国の首都ワシントンＤＣまで電車で２０分。空いた時間に国立公文書館に行きました。もちろん「あの」独立宣言証書も観ましたが、私にとっては知の巨人であるアルバートアインシュタインさんとエンリコ・フェルミさんの移民申請書を観られたことの方が感動を覚えました。アメリカは彼らのような人類の宝を戦争から守ったのですね。奇しくも今回は旅の途中で広島の原爆記念日を迎えました。黙禱。

After finishing the work at UCSD, I went to the next state, Maryland, to visit Dr. Paglione who had just been start-up his new laboratory at the University of Maryland (Colledge Park). They are energetically performing the research on Iron-based Pnictide Superconductors by synthesizing and characterization of single crystal samples. They archive outstanding results in this topics. After I made a short presentation of a introduction of my recent research progress, they gave me a lab tour. The laboratory is located at an underground rotunda, which was originally used like as a research center for superconductivity (?), where a big cyclotron had been once installed with 6 feet-thick concrete walls. The well-developed research facilities bring home to me a difference of start-up research finding between USA and Japan. Naturally, there must be a responsibility, which proportional to the amount of funding… You know what it is.
College Park is a peaceful area in suburban Washington, D.C. (it takes 20 min by subway) I found a free hour visit to the National Archives. Of course, I saw the “Declaration of Independence”, but I was much inspired by application forms of immigration for two intellectual giants, Dr. Albert Einstein and Dr. Enrico Fermi. I realized that the United States has saved such human world treasures from the WWII. On the other hand, just 64 years ago, the atomic bomb was dropped to Hiroshima. During the business trip, I paid one minute’s silent tribute for the repose of the souls of war dead.
