北大理学部棟には蔦が繁茂していて、見事な紅葉です。ポプラ並木を見学に訪れる人々を楽しませてくれます。日々変わるグラデーションは秋の終わりを感じさせます。私は蔦が絡まる古い建物を観るとかならず、有名なアメリカの建築家の言葉を思い出します。

彼らしいジョークでした。シカゴで観た彼のコンクリート建築には、結構いい感じに蔦が絡まっていましたが・・・

前東大総長で俳人でもあり、小渕内閣では文部大臣、科学技術庁長官を歴任された物理学者、有馬朗人（ありまあきと）先生はこう詠っています

「城あれば　戦がありぬ　蔦紅葉」　(有馬朗人: 1930〜)

古城の石垣を登る蔦紅葉は、有馬先生に戦の炎を想像させたのでしょうか？

Red leaf ivy has grown over the department-of-science bldg. in Hokkaido Univ. The ivy-clad old brick construction delights the eyes of tourists, who are visiting the campus to see a famous strand of poplar trees. The beautiful gradation of color bring home to us the turn of the year, which always reminds me a quote of a famous American architect,

“A doctor can bury his mistakes, but an architect can only advise his clients to plant vines.” - Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959)

That’s how he is. However, his works, which I saw in Chicago, are also covered with ivy…

Dr. Akito ARIMA, who is a physicist, haiku poet, and former president of University of Tokyo, Minister of Education, and Director-General of the Science and Technology Agency, composed a haiku like this,

“There is an old castle with red leaf ivy, once there was a war.” - Akito ARIMA (1930-)

So the red ivy climbing on the stonewall conjured him an image of flames from the old war?
