Chair’s Message

Welcome to the Division of Condensed Matter Physics at Hokkaido University.

Here, we explore the fascinating world of physics, aiming to uncover the universal principles that lie beneath the diverse phenomena of nature. From quantum many-body systems to complex materials and even biological processes, we strive to understand the deep connections that shape our world.

Our division works closely with top research institutes in Japan, including the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) and RIKEN. With 13 research groups and 26 dedicated faculty members, we cover a wide range of research areas, from high-temperature superconductivity and strongly correlated electron systems to magnetism, topological materials, organic molecular crystals, complex networks, photo-induced phase transitions, and nonlinear optics. We’re proud to be at the forefront of research in these exciting fields.

Our beautiful campus, surrounded by nature, offers a great environment for learning, research, and personal growth. Many of our students go on to successful careers in academia and beyond. We value open communication between students and faculty, creating a supportive community where ideas and discoveries thrive.

We believe that by unraveling the physics behind the beauty of the natural world, we can build new knowledge and contribute to the advancement of humanity. We’re excited to work together with passionate, curious students who are eager to explore the wonders of physics.

We look forward to welcoming you to our division!
