Photonic Band Gap Materials: A New Frontier in Quantum Optics

要旨：　Since the invention of the laser, the field of photonics has progressed through the development of materials which mold the flow of light. Photonic band gap materials represent a new class of dielectiric materials in which light exhibits the phenomenon of localization. In many respects, these materials are the optical analogues of semiconductors. In this talk, I discuss how these systems present a new frontier in fundamental physics and I suggest some important technological applications. For example, the spontaneous emission of light from atoms can be completely inhibited in these materials. Instead, the photon forms a bound state to the emitting atom! This has applications to zero-threshould microlasers, novel nonlinear optical response, all-optical transistor, and single-atom optical memory.
