Superconductivity is a phenomena of exactly zero electrical resistance below its critical temperature Tc. Furthermore, superconductors show a wonderful property; they float above a magnet (fig. 1) and they are utilized for the superconducting maglev. However, an expensive cryogen is necessary for using superconductors because the highest Tc is currently 135 K. We need to find new materials which become superconductivity at room temperatures. The mechanism of high temperature superconductivity for cuprates is still unclear. If its mechanism is clarified, it will help us to discover materials with higher Tc. In our group, we have investigated the electronic properties for high-Tc cuprates using the scanning tunneling microscopy, STM, (fig. 2) to clarify the mechanism of high temperature superconductivity.
