Magnetic and optical properties of low-dimensional electron systems

Research Activities

Quantum fluctuations have a remarkable effect on the properties of low-dimensional materials, where spatial degrees of freedom are more or less limited. Even the electronic charge and spin degrees of freedom, which might look like the belly and back of a human being, are separable (charge-spin separation), that is, there may be independent charge and spin sectors in electronic excitations. Itinerant electrons may align periodically (charge density wave) and turn insulating with accompanied lattice distortion (Peierls instability). There appear ghost-like spins (quantum magnetization tunneling) in single-molecule nanomagnets.

We take a wide and positive interest in “novel quantum cooperative phenomena peculiar to low dimensions” and theoretically solve any mystery there. We theoreticians research, just like artists create. Indeed a particular talent may be necessary to theoretical physics research, but you should, above all, persist in “why” in matters from metals to information. We are excited to find out the consistency between different equations at a glance. We are impressed to look into the universe spreading inside of materials through elaborate coding and half-an-year calculation. We have to be sensitive in such a fashion.
